Volcan's secrets

In 1982, after 4 years of work, brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer unveils in town center the Arts Center firstly named "the yoghurt pot" then "the Volcano" regarding the building'shape.

The first french Arts Center wich were located in André Malraux Museum is quickly transferred in Volcano. The chosen location is not due to chance since this was already a meeting place very frequented by intellectuals before war.


Volcano became one of the most important national stage in 1991. The place is a national reference regarding theatre, music, danse and circus with its 800 and 125 seats.

Designated UNESCO World Heritage in 2005, the Volcano is renovated in 2012 under Oscar Niemeyer's eye since his death on december 6th 2012. The rehabilitations preserved the dove shaped bodyguards for whom can take the high road.
