Movies in Le Havre
The Lumière brothers, inventors of the cinematograph, presented their invention on March 22, 1895 to a group of scientists. But, the very first public session of cinema will take place on Saturday, December 28, 1895 in Paris, in the basement of the Grand Café of 44 boulevard des Capucines. Among the 35 curious to attend the show, figure the magician Georges Méliès.
Antoine Lumière having refused to sell him his projector / camera, Georges Méliès will go to London where he acquires a bioscope. He will shoot his first films in Le Havre and will be considered as the founder of the 7th art, having created the first cinematic tricks, still used today.
Le Havre will have its first public screening of film in 1896 at the Grand Café Tortoni.
The light and the many possibilities of plans (characteristic architecture, forest, sea, port, etc.) make Le Havre a privileged city for film shoots. Between 1896 and 2023, 133 movies were shot in Le Havre with 135 awards or nominations.
54 years ago in Sainte-Adresse,
La Désirade was shot by Alain Cuniot
